Murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue combine into one satisfyingly complex and entertainingly atmospheric novel.

Harriet Vanger, a scion of one of Sweden’s wealthiest families disappeared over forty years ago. All these years later, her aged uncle continues to seek the truth. He hires Mikael Blomkvist, a crusading journalist recently trapped by a libel conviction, to investigate. He is aided by the pierced and tattooed punk prodigy Lisbeth Salander. Together they tap into a vein of unfathomable iniquity and astonishing corruption.

I am sure you all heard about the late, Swedish author and journalist, Stieg Larsson.

This is the first book of a series of three written by Stieg Larsson( later on 2015, David Lagercrantz will continue the series with a fourth book, called ‘The Girl in The Spider Web’). The main character, named Lisbeth Salander, was inspired by an incident which occurred when the writer was 15 and a friend of his was raped by 3 gang men and Larsson just stood by, not doing anything to stop it. The murder of Catrine da Costa was also an inspiration when he wrote the book.

To be honest, this was the first book that I read because I wanted to, not because I had to. That happened if I remember right, 6 years ago and I have to tell you that I don’t regret reading it. I finished it in just three days, and I liked it so much that I couldn’t let it go of my hand, I even used to read it at school. After I finished it, I went straight to the library to buy the second book of the Millennium series, called ‘The Girl Who Played With Fire’.

I loved every word of it, every character, even I felt in love with Lisbeth Salander’s character. She’s unique. Her way of been, having way too many tattoos on her body or piercings, her troubled past but brilliant mind, her struggle for life, all this makes her unique, an example. Her, for a brief moment, partner, Mikael Blomkvist, is formidable also. He’s an honest journalist who would do anything to find out the truth and to expose the corruption of the Swedish government.

The action of the book is just great. There are no boring passages or uninteresting. Reading the title, you will think that the book will be focused on the girl right?? Well, let me tell you that it isn’t true. The book is focused on each character. I think that this is what I loved the most about this book.

Closer look

Michael Blomkvist, the publisher of the political magazine Millennium , loses in 2002 a case involving allegation about billionaire industrialist Hans-Erik Wennerstrom. He is sentenced to three months in prison and ordered to pay damages and costs.

Meanwhile, Henrik Vanger who is haunted by the disappearance of his grandniece, Harriet, in 1966, decided to hire a company to investigate Blomkvist. The investigation is carried by Lisbeth Salander, a brilliant researcher and computer hacker, with a deeply troubled and dark past.

Blomkvist accepts the job with Vanger’s promise that he will give him evidence against Wennerstrom in return. After moving to the island, Blomkvist meets the Vanger clan, Martin the current CEO of the company and Harriet’s brother, Isabella, Martin’s mother, and Cecilia, a headmistress who was Harriet’s friend. Nobody, except Henrik Vanger, was happy having Blomkvist on the island. After many researches, he discovered new evidence in Harriet’s disappearance. One clue is a pair of photographs, detailing Harriet’s sudden discomfort at the sight of a man in a prep school blazer. The second evidence is a set of five names and numbers believed to be old telephone numbers. Afterward, Blomkvist’s daughter identifies them as passages from the Book of Leviticus, which describe rules about the treatment and punishment of women. At that moment, Blomkvist correlates one of them with the murder of a Vanger Corporation secretary in 1949, thing that made him realize that he can be on a trail of a serial killer.

Feeling that he may need help, he requested an assistant. Vanger’s lawyer suggested Salander. Blomkvist sees the report she had prepared for Vanger and realize that Salander has hacked into his computer, so he decided to confront her and ask her to help him with the investigation. She agreed, moved to the island with him and soon they became lovers.

Salander character is a complex one. Having behavioral and mental problems since she was a child, she ended up in a mental institution until her 18th birthday. Her father, a german secret spy, has abused her and her mother, but sparing her twin sister, Camilla. After setting him on fire, she was institutionalized, having Holger Palmgren as a legal guardian. When Palmgren suffers a stroke, Nils Bjurman replaced him, who will extort sexual favors from her and will rape her. Salander will use a hidden camera on him to record her assault, which she will use for her revenge, torturing him and threatening to ruin him unless he gives her full control of her life and finances.

Soon after she moved to the island, a local cat is left dismembered on their porch and Blomkvist is fired upon from a distance during an afternoon jog. they uncover the remaining four murders described in Harriet’s journal as well as several more that fit the profile: women who are sexually assaulted and killed in locations where the Vanger Corporation did business. Their suspicion goes on Gottfried Vanger, Martin and Harriet’s father, but soon afterward they discovered that he predeceased his last victim.

While Salander continue to search through Vanger Corporation archives, Blomkvist identifies the man who frightened Harriet in the pictures, her brother, Martin, so he decides to go and take a look at his house. Martin founds him in his basement and takes him prisoner. He reveals that his father thought him how to rape and kill women, revealing that Gottfried sexually abused both him and Harriet. Martin denies killing her sister and decided to get rid of Blomkvist once and for all but he is stopped by Salander who discovered the connections by herself.

In the end, Blomkvist found out what happened with Harriet, by talking with Anita, Cecilia’s sister, who tells him that Harriet is alive and is living in Australia under her name. Blomkvist flies there and learns that she disappear because she was afraid of her brother, Martin after she killed their father in self defence.

Harriet returns to Sweden.

Blomkvist received the evidence against Wennerstrom but is useless. However, with Salander’s help, he received enough evidence to clear his name and to unmask the true face of Wennerstrom’s businesses.

The end!
